Shift hits the van

The Situation

Shift’s Driver.App for Android and iOS is developed in Flutter and continuously updated solely by an engineering teem – without any design consultation. As often, this worked well just for a while.

After aggregating feedback from drivers I was able to improve a couple of UI/UX-Hurdles. The new designs helped also to clean up the component library.

Shift.online is a UK based logistics marketplace for two-person or last mile delivery.

The Process

1. Research

Talk to the stakeholders:

  • Flutter engineering team

  • Driver feedback

2. Design conclusions

  • More contrast

  • Less grey tones

  • Improve legibility

  • Distinguishable patterns

  • Cleaner component lib

3. Implementation

Due to continuous communication the implementation via Figma was very seamless.

Results

The drivers appreciated the changes as they needed to look at their phones.

The engineering team was happy to be able to build cleaner screens in a shorter time.

  • Reducing containers
  • Sticking to the pick-up and drop-off colours
  • Always blue text in the slider

  • Modals were now on an overlay with a color of the brand
  • Bolder type for better legibility
Sometimes it’s a bunch of small changes that make the work for us and the users easier.
